MISSILES

The technical challenges of missile technology

Interconnect systems for the missile market face a set of unique technical challenges due to the extreme conditions and strict requirements associated with missile systems.

These challenges include:

  • Vibration and Shock Resistance: Missiles experience extreme vibrations and shocks during launch, flight, and impact. Interconnect systems must be designed to withstand these forces to maintain electrical continuity and reliability.
  • High-G Environments: Missiles undergo rapid acceleration and high gravitational forces during launch and flight. Connectors and cables must be able to handle these high-G forces without compromising their performance.
  • Extreme Temperatures: Missiles may be exposed to both extremely high temperatures during launch and descent and extremely low temperatures at high altitudes. Interconnects need to operate reliably across this wide temperature range.
  • EMI and RFI Shielding: Missiles often carry sensitive electronics and communication systems. Effective electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio-frequency interference (RFI) shielding is essential to protect these systems from external electromagnetic sources and ensure secure communication.
  • Compliance with Military Standards: The missile industry often requires compliance with strict military standards, such as MIL-DTL-38999 or MIL-DTL-5015, to ensure that connectors meet the necessary performance and durability requirements.

Amphenol Socapex interconnect solutions for Missile applications

Interconnect solutions for missiles are critical components that enable communication and control between various subsystems of the missile.

Some of the interconnect solutions used in missiles include:

  • Circular connectors: These are circular-shaped electrical connectors that are used to link electrical systems within the missile. They are designed for high reliability and ruggedness in harsh environments.
  • Fiber-optic cordsets & cables: These are used to transmit high-speed data signals between different parts of the missile, providing fast and reliable communication.
  • Connector accessories: These include components such as backshells and protective caps that are used to protect and secure the connectors and cable assemblies.
  • Wire harnesses: These are assemblies of wires, connectors, and other components that are used to transmit signals and power between different parts of the missile.

Choosing the right interconnect solutions

The choice of interconnect solution will depend on factors such as the size and weight requirements of the missile, the operating environment, the signal and power requirements, and the level of reliability and durability required.
